Elon Musk's SpaceX Dragon Craft Marks Eighth Crewed Mission for NASA, Sending Diverse Team to Space.
A multinational crew of four astronauts from the United States, Denmark, Japan, and Russia embarked on the Crew-7 mission, led by American Jasmin Moghbeli. The launch took place at 3:27 a.m. from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, where a Falcon 9 rocket carrying the Dragon spacecraft roared into the skies in front of an audience of nearly 10,000 observers.
The separation of the Dragon vehicle from the Falcon 9 rocket, with the crew safely in orbit, was met with cheers in the mission control area, as reported by Al Jazeera. Moghbeli expressed unity among the crew members from different nations, emphasizing a shared mission and purpose.
NASA's decision to postpone the launch to Saturday was to allow engineers an additional day to inspect a component of the Crew Dragon capsule's environmental control and life support system, as detailed in a NASA blog post.
After docking with the International Space Station (ISS) in less than 24 hours, the spacecraft is set to bring the crew members back to Earth, completing a round trip of approximately 400 kilometers (249 miles) above the planet's surface.
Both Moghbeli and Borisov are embarking on their inaugural space voyages. Moghbeli, a naval test pilot, expressed her long-standing desire for this opportunity, emphasizing her excitement about witnessing Earth from space and experiencing weightlessness.
The launch signifies SpaceX's eighth crewed mission to the ISS as part of NASA's commercial crew program. The program aims to reduce dependency on Russian rockets for astronaut transportation following the discontinuation of the space shuttle program in 2011. While Boeing is the second contracted private partner, its program has encountered delays and technical challenges, with no crew flights having taken place yet.
Borisov's journey marks the third instance of a Russian astronaut taking flight aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft atop a Falcon 9 rocket.
